With the team of AS-P and ProProjekt Transsolar has developed the environmentally-friendly, stadium and outdoor comfort strategies for the BID Book of the successful Q2022 team.
Outdoor comfort and pioneering solar cooling concept
Together with Albert Speer and Partner, Frankfurt Transsolar Climate Engineers have developed environmentally-friendly, outdoor cooling strategies to apply to the stadiums, training sites, fan zones and circulation areas for the comfort of visitors, team delegations and match officials during sometimes the hot and humid conditions that characterize summer in the region.
Target comfort parameters were identified with specific reference to local summer climatic conditions and FIFA requirements for players and spectators. Passive and active comfort strategies were devised for the different venue types. Pioneering architectural and climate engineering strategies have been created for generic sites for later customized application to specific venues; they can serve as valuable models for other venues with comparable climatic conditions.
The cooling strategy for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ Qatar ensures outdoor comfort for players, match officials, fans and media representatives. The innovative, fully-solar-powered cooling systems keep the tournament's carbon footprint low and the comfort level high.
The strategy has three main elements:
- focus on low energy concepts to create thermal comfort,
- apply innovative, green, highly efficient cooling technology
- produce electrical energy by integrated photovoltaic systems.
Passive and active strategies to enhance outdoor comfort for pedestrians and spectators
The approach deployed in Qatar 2022 for the outdoor comfort strategy is to optimize the passive architectural strategies and combine them with dedicated active and climate engineering strategies.
Especially for pedestrians and spectators several concepts have been developed based on a detailed analysis of human-biometereological parameters. The goal is to deliver outdoor conditions in plazas and circulation areas with reduced heat stress.
In the stadiums, where spectators and players will spend more time, an excellent comfort will be provided by solar cooling systems and soft conditioning
Comfort rating at major sport competitions
The outdoor comfort conditions of different mayor international sport competitions during the last two decades has been compared. The results show that some sport major competitions took place under thermal conditions which are rated as very hot and related to extreme heat stress. For the FIFA stadiums, fan zones and training pitches for the soccer teams Transsolar has developed innovative solar cooling and soft conditioning concepts which will allow excellent condition for players and spectators.
